How online ripping typically works
Details vary by product, but most platforms follow the same high-level path:
- Buy a digital or live pack, or a break spot. You pay for a pack, a seat in a live opening, or a randomized position.
- Reveal, or watch the open. Some apps show an instant digital animation. Others stream a person opening a sealed pack or slab on camera.
- The pull maps to a real card. That card is usually vaulted (held by the platform) or available to ship. You are buying a claim on a physical card, not only a picture of one.
- Keep, ship, trade, or cash out. Depending on the platform, you may request shipment, leave the card in a vault, trade it, list it, or accept an instant buyback or store credit.
Fees, odds, shipping rules, and buyback terms are set by each operator. Read those terms before you participate. NTCA is describing the model, not grading any company’s odds or payouts.

NTCA’s take
Holding the card still matters to a lot of collectors, including NTCA’s founders. Opening a pack in hand, sliding a card into a sleeve, and putting it in a binder is the hobby many of us grew up with.
Online ripping is also a real, growing part of the business. Vaults, live streams, and instant buybacks are how a younger (and some longtime) collectors now chase hits. Shops, breakers, and platforms will keep experimenting. The association’s job is to help the community understand the landscape — not to sell a seat in someone else’s break.
None of the companies on this page paid for this listing. NTCA does not endorse them, rank them, or guarantee their products, authentication, shipping, or buyback offers.
